RedLaser 2.6 – Now Scans Artificial Organs from 2057!

with 12 comments

RedLaser 2.6 is now available on the App Store. This update has a number of enhancements, including:

  • Multiple scan toggle switch:  This mode makes RedLaser act like a checkout scanner.  Scan an item and move onto the next without pressing any buttons.  This is good for cataloging your entire bookshelf or rapidly zapping several items without having to wait for RedLaser to search for prices.
  • Local library search:  This feature actually launched before 2.6, but we never had a chance to announce it on the blog.  RedLaser now searches WorldCat, the world’s largest library catalog, to find books at local libraries.  Check out the TV spot on this feature by NBC 4 Columbus.
  • Improved startup speed and less memory use: RedLaser’s more efficient with its memory use during scanning and during normal product browsing, and it also starts up a bit faster.

And keep your eye out for Repo Men movie posters like the one below.  If you look in the corner, you’ll see a barcode, and right below it the text “ACTIVATE WITH REDLASER.”  RedLaser exclusively displays actual product listings for the artificial organs, or Artiforgs, that are the subject of the upcoming Repo Men movie starring Jude Law and Forest Whitaker.

You can scan them with RedLaser 2.5, but RedLaser 2.6 will automatically activate the Artiforg product details when you scan these posters which are scattered around the country.

Additional notes: For advanced Custom Apps users, we’ve made it possible to put a “Scan” button inside your RedLaser custom app.  This is nice if you want to create a web-based utility where users can scan multiple items without needing to exit RedLaser every time.

  1. That eye is pretty pricey… can you get me a discount?

  2. I'll tell you what, I'll give you the nice face discount, only 300K! At that price I'm basically giving it away.

  3. So excited that libraries and library listings via WorldCat are now part of RedLaser. Note that right now it's US only, books only. But the WorldCat team continues to test more formats like DVDs, CDs, etc. and looks forward to expanding geographies as soon as we can.

  4. Library features are pretty darn cool, and the improved start-up time and lower memory usage shows that you guys care about your app. Call me crazy, but 2.6 honestly seems to be scanning faster and better than 2.5 on my 3G. Maybe it's just practice, but I get the codes to recognize quicker than ever lately. Thanks for the continued support.

The RepoMan deal is neat, just tried it on a poster earlier today. I'm proud of you guys, honestly. :) A bit surprised they didn't go with the more standard QR Code. Please don't let the advertising get too intrusive, but otherwise – a big congrats.

  5. I'd sell my face for half that, as long as I could go around with a darth vader mask after.

  7. Thanks for the kind words Tony! We didn't intend on any speed improvement, but maybe it feels faster/snappier because of the lower memory usage.

Also, where did you see a poster? We actually haven't seen one in the wild yet =)!

  8. There's 4 of them up on the side of a building in downtown San Diego, CA. Actually, they were switched over the weekend from the style shown above to a new poster with "The Repomen are coming", also with the barcodes.

  10. Thanks for the update, just got an iPhone today and this is going straight on there :)

However, I have a small question / request.

Does Redlaser have the ability to redirect scan search results to search through a localy store file (csv, text, i don't care), instead of via the web? Is there any plan on implementing a feature in a full release? Or would it be possible to use the RL SDK and create an app that does so? It would be immensly handy for us cheap folk who don't have a 3G/EDGE subscription and do have a huge database of EANs with prices… ;)

  11. This capability does exist through RedLaser's email feature. Basically, everything in your Scanned Items list can be emailed. The email contains both names & links to products scanned, as well as an attachment that is a raw TXT file containing EAN numbers. These can be imported into your own programs. Hope this helps!

  12. Where can I find the 'Scan' button in the Custom app? I am using version 2.6.
